Connecting with your Legislators and visiting the Capitol
Legislators want to hear from you - their constituents!
Legislators appreciate hearing from and listening to their constituents. You play a critical role in keeping legislators informed of issues affecting people with disabilities and their families so that they can make decisions about funding and policies. MOHR encourages everyone to contact their legislators on issues related to disability services. You can find out who represents you on the Legislature website.
Writing to your legislator? Here are some points to include.
- Include that you are a constituent and live in their district.
- If you are aware of past advocacy on behalf of people with disabilities, thank them for their prior support.
- Ask them for their support on your specific issue. If you have the bill number(s), be sure to include those.
- Share a little bit about your story and why this issue is important to you. Be brief but specific!
- Thank them again for their advocacy and offer them the opportunity to reach out to you via email or phone for more information. Include your contact information.
- Sign your email or letter.
