Earth Day, observed every April 22, is a valuable opportunity to reflect on how we care for the planet—and how we include everyone in that mission. For MOHR members across the state, Earth Day offered a meaningful chance to promote environmental responsibility while empowering individuals with disabilities to take an active role in shaping a more sustainable future.
Hubbard County DAC participants, working through Northern Hearts Studio and The Depot, showcased their artistic talents by embellishing beautiful birdhouses! These handcrafted homes don’t just brighten outdoor spaces—they also provide safe nesting places for local bird species. Birds are vital to healthy ecosystems, but many face challenges due to habitat loss. Birdhouses are a simple yet impactful way we can help. This project combined hands-on learning, environmental awareness, and creative expression in a way that truly embodied the spirit of Earth Day. Birdhouses are currently on display at The Tin Ceiling Gallery in Park Rapids.
Becker County DAC focused on hands-on environmental care close to home. They planted new greenery, created vibrant paper Earths, and took time to clean up litter from their grounds. These activities connected everyone to the environment in tangible ways and fostered conversations about how even small efforts—like picking up garbage or planting a flower—can lead to a cleaner, more beautiful community for all.
WorkAbilites Inc. took their Earth Day spirit off-site by heading to Lakeview Park through the Adopt-A-Park program. With gloves on and trash bags in hand, they worked together to remove litter and restore the natural beauty of the park for everyone to enjoy. As an added highlight, the group also participated in the release of butterflies they had raised—symbolizing growth, transformation, and our role in protecting even the smallest members of our ecosystems.
These activities demonstrate how diverse approaches to Earth Day can be both fun and impactful. They help build knowledge, foster independence, and strengthen the sense of connection to the world around us. This Earth Day, MOHR members celebrated not just nature—but the creativity, compassion, and leadership within their communities. When everyone is included in caring for our planet, the future becomes brighter for all. Thank you to our members for sharing your celebrations with us!
