Five years ago, MRCI began a strategic initiative, moving away from center-based services and in-center employment to focus entirely on competitive, community-based employment and person-centered day services. While this transition was already in progress, the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the effort and deepened the organization’s commitment to innovation, adaptability, and mission-driven support. Today, MRCI’s transition has been a success, serving more than 1,200 individuals annually.
MRCI's services have always been person-centered, working to help individuals reach their goals with dignity, independence, and meaningful choice. As the pandemic disrupted service models across the country, MRCI created two new programs that continue to shape its service offerings today: the Community-Based Day Services Program and a Remote Day Services Program.
The Community-Based Day Services model emphasizes skill-building, independence, and active participation in local communities. Experiences are planned, coordinated, and delivered to develop and improve skills while promoting independence. Participants engage in volunteer activities, health and wellness education, community outings, and recreational and educational opportunities - all built around their interests and goals.
Meanwhile, the Remote Program was a good fit for people who needed accessibility and flexibility. It provides training and support, allowing participants to engage from the comfort of their homes. The virtual format has expanded MRCI’s reach and continues to serve as an option for many people.
One of the most significant elements of MRCI’s transformation has been its shift away from center-based work and work crews to competitive, integrated employment. MRCI has built partnerships with over 500 employment partners to create jobs in various industries that pay competitive wages in inclusive work environments.
From retail and hospitality to healthcare and logistics, MRCI-supported individuals are finding success and building careers. Employers have been enthusiastic partners in this effort. One employment partner, Brian Hodapp of GC Distributing, shared, “The contributions of our MRCI-supported team members have been nothing short of exceptional. Their impact on our business is profound, and witnessing the positive changes in their lives as a result of being part of our team is incredibly rewarding. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to work with such talented individuals.”
From direct support professionals to program coordinators and leadership, the MRCI team has remained committed to the organization’s mission and to the people they serve. “Without their countless hours of hard work and unwavering commitment, I am not confident that the MRCI we love would exist,” said Mark Dehen, MRCI Board President. “Their efforts have truly shaped the organization into the beacon of support and empowerment it is today.” Board Member Duane Olenius echoed this sentiment: “For five years, I’ve witnessed the leadership of our staff who have truly been the driving force behind this transition. Their dedication to our mission and their ability to adapt and innovate during challenging times have been nothing short of remarkable.”
In addition to core programs, MRCI has worked to strengthen internal practices around staff development, feedback, and collaboration. Regular training, peer learning, and continuous improvement have helped foster a resilient, mission-focused culture. MRCI’s journey to become a fully community-based organization has been challenging, but the organization is proud of the change and looking forward to the future.
