Feathered Friends Find New Homes Thanks to Local Craftsmanship

Aaron Valdez and Marshal Advance at Garvin Park putting up birdhouses with Lyon County Environmental Department

Aaron Valdez, a longtime client of Marshall Advance, recently saw months of hard work come to life as birdhouses he built were installed at Garvin Park with help from the Lyon County Environmental Department.

“This is one of the most beautiful stories ever because it is the culmination of everything we’ve been trying to do over the past, at least, 10 years,” said Advance Chief Operating Officer Elizabeth Schear. “It’s been a continuous evolution.”

Inspired by his love for birds, Valdez teamed up with Advance employees Kylie Peterson and Ashton Stahl to design and build the birdhouses. With support and problem-solving, like switching from a hammer to a brad nailer to better suit Valdez’s needs, the team perfected the process and completed 20 birdhouses, all of which were built with locally sourced wood and sold to the county for installation across Lyon County parks, starting with Garvin Park, where Valdez proudly watched the first ones go up. He even got to explore the park in an Action Trackchair, his first time using the all-terrain wheelchair.

Schear emphasized the importance of community involvement: “We make connections wherever we can for just normal community, day-to-day activities... We’ve had great community involvement, and huge support.”

Valdez is already brainstorming ideas for future projects with the county. “This evolves into more,” Schear said. “Isn’t that how life works for everybody? It’s just who you know, find something in common, and off you go.”
