Ability Building Community Volunteers Make an Impact at the Salvation Army

A crew of volunteers work to keep the Salvation Army building clean for the community

Since June 2025, Ability Building Community (ABC) has proudly partnered with the Salvation Army to create meaningful volunteer opportunities that benefit both people with disabilities and the broader community. Every Monday and Friday morning, ABC volunteers arrive ready to work, helping to keep the Salvation Army building clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone who relies on its services.

ABC volunteers take on a variety of important tasks, including vacuuming, mopping, dusting, trash removal, and cleaning bathrooms. This work not only supports a nonprofit in need, but also allows volunteers to build job skills, develop routines, and discover what types of tasks they enjoy the most. It is truly a partnership where everyone benefits.

Many volunteers speak warmly about their experiences. Ja’Nese shares that she enjoys coming to the Salvation Army to clean and feels especially proud of her work in the bathrooms, sweeping, mopping, and dusting. “It makes me feel good to help out,” she says. Charlie explains that the work makes him feel proud, particularly because Salvation Army staff regularly thank him and recognize his hard work. Other volunteers have found favorites as well: Marcella enjoys dusting, “A” likes vacuuming, Mohammed is happy to do any task but especially likes trash and bathrooms, and Caleb takes pride in putting new trash liners in the cans. Each person’s role is valued, and every contribution matters.

A major strength of this partnership is the welcoming and respectful way Salvation Army staff treat ABC volunteers. Volunteers consistently share feeling appreciated and supported while they work. Staff take time to share updates about the building, offer guidance, and express genuine excitement when the ABC crew arrives. This positive environment helps volunteers feel comfortable, confident, and part of the team.

Thy, an ABC staff member, has observed significant growth since the partnership began. Volunteers have improved their cleaning skills, confidence, and independence. Success comes from patience, individualized support, and understanding what motivates each person. By meeting individuals where they are and working alongside them, ABC ensures that everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

This partnership is much more than cleaning a building. It is about inclusion, dignity, and belonging. Volunteering at the Salvation Army helps people with disabilities feel connected to their community and proud of the work they do. It also highlights the importance of ensuring that everyone has the chance to contribute through meaningful work.
